Meet Mike Tanas
Mortgage Strategist. Entrepreneur. Advisor to Homebuyers, Business Owners & Families.
I didn’t enter the mortgage business because I wanted to sell mortgages.I entered it because I became fascinated by the decisions behind them.
For most people, buying a home is one of the largest financial decisions they will ever make. Yet the mortgage is often treated like a commodity—a rate, a payment, a closing date, and a stack of paperwork.
I believe it should be treated differently.
A mortgage is a financial instrument. The right structure can create flexibility, preserve cash, support a growing family, help a business owner manage liquidity, or become a powerful component of a broader wealth-building strategy.
The wrong structure can do the opposite.
My job is to help people understand that difference.
Where It Started
I grew up in California and moved to Texas as a teenager. That transition shaped much of how I see the world today.
Moving taught me that circumstances can change quickly, but the ability to adapt, learn, and make thoughtful decisions is what creates opportunity.
Texas eventually became home, and I went on to attend Texas A&M University, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics.
Economics gave me a framework for thinking about incentives, markets, risk, opportunity, and the consequences of financial decisions.
But my career didn’t immediately take me into finance.
Instead, I became a software developer.
I built tax software while pursuing a master’s degree in Information Technology from Arizona State University. Working in technology taught me something that would later become central to the way I approach mortgage lending:
Complex problems become manageable when you understand the system behind them.
Software requires asking the right questions, identifying constraints, analyzing inputs, anticipating outcomes, and building solutions that work in the real world.
I approach mortgages much the same way.
The Decision to Enter Mortgage Lending
During COVID, I made a major career decision.
I left the technology path and entered mortgage lending.
At first glance, the transition may seem unusual—economics, software development, tax technology, and then mortgages.
To me, the connection was obvious.
Mortgage lending sits at the intersection of economics, finance, technology, real estate, risk, and human behavior.
But more importantly, it sits at the intersection of people and major life decisions.
Every mortgage represents something bigger.
- It’s a young professional buying a first home.
- It’s a veteran using a benefit they earned through service.
- It’s a business owner trying to qualify while building a company.
- It’s a family moving into a home that better fits their life.
- It’s someone rebuilding after divorce.
- It’s a couple relocating for an opportunity.
- It’s a family deciding whether to move up, downsize, refinance, or stay exactly where they are.
The loan is the mechanism.
The decision is the important part.
That realization changed how I approached the business.
I Don’t Believe in Selling the Mortgage First
The mortgage industry can be incredibly transactional.
Someone asks, “What’s your rate?”
Someone else asks, “How fast can you close?”
Those things matter.
But they aren’t the first questions I want to answer.
I want to know:
- Where are you today?
- Where are you trying to go?
- What does your financial life look like?
- What are you optimizing for?
- What could change over the next few years?
- And what are you giving up by choosing one strategy over another?
Once those questions are answered, we can talk about the mortgage.
That philosophy has become the foundation of my business.
I don’t believe my value comes from having access to a loan program.
My value comes from knowing when, why, and how that program should be used—and when it shouldn’t.
The People I Serve
Today, I work with a wide range of borrowers across Texas, with a particular focus on people whose financial situations require more thought than simply plugging numbers into a standard mortgage application.
I work with first-time buyers and young professionals who want to understand the financial implications of buying their first home.
I work with veterans and military families who want to maximize the benefits available to them.
I work with self-employed professionals and business owners whose income doesn’t always fit neatly into traditional underwriting models.
And I work with families navigating major transitions—marriage, divorce, relocation, growing families, downsizing, career changes, and other moments when a real-estate decision can have significant financial consequences.
These clients have something in common.
They don’t just want someone to process paperwork.
They want someone who can think.
The Mortgage Is Part of a Bigger Picture
I believe the best mortgage professionals understand that the mortgage doesn’t exist in isolation.
A home purchase can affect cash flow, taxes, liquidity, investment decisions, insurance, business planning, retirement strategy, and future real-estate opportunities.
That’s why I believe in working collaboratively with the professionals already around my clients—Realtors, CPAs, financial advisors, insurance professionals, and other trusted advisors.
I’m not interested in replacing those relationships.
I’m interested in making sure the mortgage decision fits within them.
Because a mortgage can look great on paper and still be the wrong decision for someone’s broader financial life.
The goal isn’t simply to qualify someone for a home.
The goal is to help them make a decision they can feel good about years after closing.
My Philosophy
I believe you should understand the decision before you make it.
I believe the best mortgage is not necessarily the one with the lowest rate.
I believe speed is valuable, but clarity is more valuable.
I believe a mortgage should fit the person’s life—not force the person’s life to fit the mortgage.
I believe business owners, veterans, first-time buyers, and families in transition deserve advice that accounts for the complexity of their actual circumstances.
And I believe the best loan officers don’t simply help people get approved.
They help people make better decisions.
That’s the standard I’m building my career around.
